MANCHESTER, NH, MARCH 26, 2024Alumni Ventures (AV) has been recognized by CB Insights as one of the top 20 performing North American venture firms in 2024. The market intelligence platform selected AV — among prestigious firms such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Khosla Ventures, and Accel — “based on portfolio strength and ability to predict future winners.”

Deal volume was also a factor for CB Insights. In that category, Alumni Ventures was among just four firms that invested in 100+ equity deals since 2023. That finding was echoed by the annual Global League Tables of PitchBook, a leading private market financial platform, which ranked AV as the most active VC in the U.S. and third globally for the second consecutive year.

Alumni Ventures’ Founder and CEO Mike Collins observed, “The CB and PitchBook rankings demonstrate the quantity and quality of our investments. We’re honored to be named to those — and among the youngest firms. We owe our record to the professionalism of our investment teams, a rigorous diligence process, and an exceptional network of 625,000 supporters that helps source and vet deals.”

The new rankings also illustrate just how much the company has grown. Since its founding in 2014 as a single-fund startup, AV has raised $1.3+ billion from 10,000+ investors and backed 1,300+ unique portfolio companies.

“We owe our record to the professionalism of our investment teams, a rigorous diligence process, and an exceptional network.”

Opening the Door to Individual Investors

While receiving growing recognition as a leader in its industry, Alumni Ventures sharply distinguishes itself from other top VCs in its focus on individual investors.

“Alumni Ventures has democratized venture capital,” explained Collins. “People own public stocks, maybe some real estate, and fixed income. Venture capital, in our opinion, should be part of that diversification story. That’s important, as significant value creation is happening in the private markets before companies go public.”

AV Co-Founder and Chief Community Officer Luke Antal underscored the disruptive nature of inviting individual investors to participate in this asset class. “Before AV, venture was largely only accessible to endowments, pension funds, or ultra-affluent individuals,” he explained. “There were few easy ways for accredited individuals to access professional-grade venture capital portfolios at a relatively small minimum. We’ve opened that door, while also making the investor experience easy and engaging.”

The pioneering nature of AV’s business has been noted by industry watchers such as Fast Company. The monthly American business magazine selected Alumni Ventures as one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies in 2022.

Consistency a Hallmark of AV’s Success

These recognitions for Alumni Ventures come at a particularly challenging time for the venture capital industry, marked by a significant pullback in investor activity amidst a venture downturn, especially in North America. In the final quarter of 2023, dealmaking and funding totals dropped to 6-year lows in the U.S. and Canada, according to CB Insights.

But as Crunchbase noted last year, “While those firms that have significantly slowed investing are often pointed out, it is also important to call out those that have not. Alumni Ventures is one of those. [AV] has been remarkably consistent this year in general.”

Collins concurred. “Consistency is a critical part of AV’s venture playbook. We’re focused on finding quality opportunities for our investors in every market, looking to the long-term potential of emerging technologies.”
