Alumni Ventures (AV), one of the world’s most active venture capital firms, is a proud investor in Kabata. The company’s next-gen dumbbells are set to revolutionize strength training by combining robotics and AI with a sleek, space-saving design. AV recently invested in the company’s $5 million seed round led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Courtside Ventures, Detroit Venture Partners, Wildcard Ventures, MVP Ventures, and AIR Ventures, and former NBA player Zaza Pachulia.

Kabata’s AI-powered dumbbells track an extensive range of metrics in real-time, including reps, time under tension, velocity, form, and symmetry. These advanced features provide users with personalized coaching, automatic weight adjustments, and insights typically available only through personal trainers, all within the comfort of their homes. The company was co-founded by CEO Kareem Aly — a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and seasoned tech investor with Deutsche Bank, Felicis Ventures, and Thomvest — and CTO Brian Lovera — who brings engineering experience from iRobot and Philips.

“Kabata was born out of a need for a more enjoyable, data-driven approach to strength training,” said Aly, who recently appeared on AV’s Tech Optimist podcast. “Our dumbbells bring the sophistication of professional gym equipment into a compact, premium design that fits into any home, no matter the size.”

The potential of Kabata’s innovative fitness solution attracted the support of Menlo Ventures, an established VC with $5.8 billion AUM. The firm has expertise in identifying high-potential consumer, enterprise, and healthcare startups, with investments in companies like Chime, Roku, Rover, Siri, and Uber. AV was pleased to invest alongside Menlo in Kabata’s seed round, which is being used to expand the company’s team, accelerate marketing efforts, and ramp up manufacturing ahead of their pre-order launch.

“We’re excited to support Kareem and Brian in their mission to make fitness more accessible and effective,” said AV Partner Meera Oak, who hosted the conversation with Aly on AV’s Tech Optimist podcast. “We believe Kabata has the potential to disrupt the fitness industry and become a leader in the connected fitness space.”
