Alumni Ventures (AV), one of the world’s most active venture capital firms, is proud to support portfolio company Swaplanet. Based in Athens, Greece, Swaplanet is tackling both environmental and economic challenges with an innovative platform revolutionizing the secondhand children’s goods market. AV invested in the company’s pre-seed round alongside other established investors, including Acasia Angels, Genesis Ventures, Zeno Capital (Helidoni Foundation), and Hellenic Business Angels Network.

Swaplanet is on a mission to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion and textile industry, which contributes 10% of global CO2 emissions and 20% of wastewater. By facilitating the exchange of gently used children’s clothing, books, and toys, Swaplanet offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to purchasing new items. This initiative not only helps parents declutter their homes but also promotes a sustainable lifestyle.

“Our goal is to make sustainability convenient and accessible for families,” said Swaplanet Co-Founder and CEO Sherif Barakat, who recently discussed his company on AV’s Tech Optimist podcast. “With the support of firms like Alumni Ventures, we are well-positioned to expand our reach and bring our solution to more parents.”

Swaplanet emerged from the Barakat family’s own abundance of unused children’s clothing. The platform’s unique model takes the hassle out of the process for parents. A courier collects the items from their doorstep, which are then sorted, washed, and uploaded to the Swaplanet website. Parents earn virtual currency, which they can use to shop for needed items. This seamless process ensures convenience and immediate credit for parents, making it a no-brainer for busy families.

Since its launch, Swaplanet has gained significant traction in Greece, demonstrating the viability and scalability of the model. The company has already expanded its offerings to include children’s books and toys, positioning itself as a comprehensive solution for secondhand children’s goods.

“We are thrilled to support Sherif and Swaplanet in their mission to provide sustainable, cost-effective solutions for families,” said AV Managing Partner Ron Levin, who hosted the conversation with Barakat on AV’s Tech Optimist podcast. “Swaplanet’s innovative approach not only addresses a significant environmental issue but also offers real value to parents.”

About Swaplanet

Swaplanet offers a “recommerce” marketplace that allows parents to resell gently used children’s clothing, earning them money while giving usable items an extended life and buyers a bargain. Swaplanet intends to grow by focusing exclusively on children’s goods, including books, toys, and other items that generally have a short useful life. Learn More »
